I’m Jen. I am on my way to becoming an officially Certified Holistic Nutritionist (I graduate this May of 2015!). Formerly, I was half keeping a happiness/wellness blog as Life And Bliss. It wasn’t a huge success. Mainly because I rarely wrote in it. Imagine that. But I love nutrition and I love wellness for the body, mind, and soul. It’s important to me, and it’s important to you! You, my lovely readers, are why I am here. I desperately want to share everything I have learned and continue to learn with you. I am barely into my 30’s and I have spent a decade seeking out everything on using food as medicine, wellness for the spirit, and happiness. I absorb it all. I am still on a journey to good health. Don’t let my knowledge and good ideas fool you into thinking I am a perfect eater or in perfect health. I struggle with my powerful sweet tooth, getting regular yoga or stretching in, and I too love potato chips and will easily power through the whole bag in one sitting. I am on this crazy trip too.

Now onto the good stuff! Hooray for summer! I really look forward to the warmer temps that come with summertime. When it starts getting hot out I can start having cold smoothies for breakfast! Why wait for the heat? I believe in the theories of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The idea is that the thermal nature and energy of foods can really effect you; i.e. having a cold smoothie with energetically “cold” fruit and vegetables when it’s cold outside is only going to make you, ultimately, feel cold and sluggish and drag down your qi (chi, that is). So, with that belief system (I think several thousand years of understanding and experimenting can’t be to far from the mark!), I have more warm, cooked meals in the colder months. This being said, summertime=Hooray For Raw Smoothies!
I have a standard, basic ingredient set I use in my smoothies. The variety comes with the fruits I add as well as in the liquid I use. Here’s what I did this morning!
SUMMER LOVIN’ SMOOTHIE
Makes 1 very large smoothie for a single meal for a hungry person (me!) Or makes about two medium sized smoothies. It all depends on your amounts of ingredients.
1 cup plain kefir (also use yogurt, or any plant based milks, coconut is really good, just go with unsweetened!)
1 knob of fresh ginger, cut up
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
1 teaspoon maca powder
1 scoop grass fed, organic whey protein powder
1 teaspoons super greens powder
1 Tablespoon coconut oil (extra virgin, cold pressed, organic preferred)
1 cup blueberries
1/2 cup blackberries
(of course, use 1 1/2 to 2 cups of any berries you prefer, I was using the gorgeous in season strawberries a few weeks ago)
2-3 large handfulls of micro greens, spinach (or use any greens you wish!)
4-8 drops stevia liquid (optional, the fruit can sometimes be plenty to sweeten)
~Place all ingredients in your blender in the order given (that helps it blend much better), and turn it on and go! You will have to stop the blender a few times and use a utensil to push the greens down. Blend until you have a nice smooth(ie) texture. It only takes a minute. Add a sprig of mint or basil if you have it (or an edible flower?) I like a straw, but remember to chew your drink. Get those digestive enzymes in your saliva mixed in!
